belinda jeffery's news and events
As many of you know, I’ve been away this past month visiting family in the UK and Spain, which has been a real joy. I love travelling, and we had many happy and memorable times, but I also love coming home again, and I felt my heart soar as we turned into the driveway of our house. In our absence, spring has well and truly arrived, and we came back to an abundant (if rather dishevelled!) veggie garden; a very overgrown lawn; and a riot of colour from all the spring blooms - it was a very special welcome home!
Bright and early (and rather bleary-eyed after the long flight) on our first morning back, we headed off to the farmers market, which I’ve sorely missed. We visited some amazing markets in London and Barcelona (you can see photos on my Instagram feed, if you would like a peek at them) where my only disappointment was the fact that I had nowhere to cook such beautiful produce, so I’m absolutely thrilled to be able to do so once more. I had to restrain myself from going overboard, but even so I came home with my shopping trolley and bags piled high with goodies – fresh local butter and cheeses; loaves of fragrant sourdough bread; oysters from the nearby river; and a plethora of fruit and vegetables, including my all-time favourites – broad beans, asparagus, and blueberries. More than enough for a real feast!
I’ve also come home to the official launch of my new book, Utterly Delicious Simple Food (Lantern 2014) which is very exciting! I was delighted to see that the Australian Women’s Weekly has featured 4 of the recipes in their latest issue; and there is much more publicity to come. I’m teaching in Lismore next week at the Pepper Tree Kitchen; and then I’m off to Sydney later in the month to do interviews and book signings, and teach at the Accoutrement and Essential Ingredient Cooking Schools…Which means I have a somewhat busy month coming up! Still, it’s really lovely to finally have my book out, and to hear people’s reactions to it - after so long in the making, it’s a very special thing for any writer.
In fact, apropos my new book being available, I thought I would feature one of the recipes from it this month. It’s for really delicious, and surprisingly easy, Asparagus, Herb and Goat’s Cheese Tarts. With asparagus in season, and lovely warm days lying ahead, for me it’s just the sort of thing I want to eat...I hope you do too!

My favourite charity
Just A Drop - www.justadrop.org
My lovely sister-in-law, Fiona Jeffery, started this international water aid charity in 1998 when she learnt that less than $2 can deliver clean water to a child for up to 10 years. From this knowledge, and her passion and commitment, Just a Drop was born, based on the premise that if people can be encouraged to give a little then collectively we can make a huge difference. I’m so proud of all she has achieved over the years and encourage you to visit the site and see the fantastic work they do.
